IRS 2008 R1: Dainik Jagran continues the lead in Hindi dailies

The Media Research Users’ Council (MRUC) has released the data for the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2008 Round 1. There aren’t any surprises in the numbers this time as well. The top 10 Hindi dailies see Dainik Jagran topping the charts again with a total readership of 566 lakh. Dainik Bhaskar follows with a total readership of 319 lakh. Amar Ujala is at No. 3 with a total readership of 296 lakh; Hindustan is on the fourth spot with a total readership of 252 lakh, and Rajasthan Patrika is at No. 5 with a total readership of 137 lakh. Punjab Kesari, with a total readership of 111 lakh, is in the sixth position, followed by Aj at No. 7 with a total readership of 74 lakh. Navbharat Times shares the eighth position with Navabharat (Mah/Chh), both having a total readership of 52 lakh. Prabhat Khabar is at No. 10 with a total readership of 50 lakh. Dainik Bhaskar strengthens presence in Hindi belt with six new editions

© exchange4media 2008 Dainik Bhaskar is in an expansion mode and has launched six editions in Chhattisgarh; Bhilai, Jagdalpur and Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh; Shimla in Himachal Pradesh; and Pali and Nagpur in Rajasthan. All these editions were launched on April 19, 2008. Officials from Dainik Bhaskar could not be contacted for further information on the launches at the time of filling this report. Dainik Bhaskar and Gujarati daily Divya Bhaskar have a presence in nine states with 37 editions and have a total of 26.7 million readers. According to the Indian Readership Survey 2007 R-2, Dainik Bhaskar, with an average issue readership of 12.8 million, is the second most-read newspaper in India, the first being Dainik Jagran, which has a readership of 16.5 million.

HT Media launches Hindi daily in Punjab

Leading publication firm HT Media announced the launch of its Hindi daily newspaper, `Hindustan`, at Chandigarh, Mohali and parts of Punjab. HT Media is a major player in the print media in India. It has a leadership position in the English newspaper market in North India and the second position in the Hindi newspaper market in the North and East.

Hindi afternoon tabloid DLA now in Jhansi; Delhi next on the agenda

© exchange4media 2008 After Agra, Ghaziabad and Meerut, Hindi afternoon tabloid DLA, has launched its fourth edition in Jhansi. In the absence of any daily in the afternoon slot, the paper has claimed that it has been received well by readers in Jhansi with a print order of over 12,000 copies in the city in the first week of its launch on April 9, 2008. Priced at Rs 1.50, the 16-page all-colour tabloid is published in two editions – city and up-country, encompassing nearby towns. At present, the sale of the copies is restricted to the city limits, but it would soon be made available in the catchment areas. Hemant Anand, Director-Marketing, DLA Media, said, “Jhansi is a Hindi-speaking belt and we hope the paper will do well here. From the business side, Jhansi is an upcoming city. In the next 5-6 years it is going to be a major hub for industries and transportation connecting Kolkata and Mumbai.” He further said, “We are also coming up with the Delhi edition in the last week of May or b
