Dainik Bhaskar to launch biz daily in July; editor named

Ltd, the publisher of Dainik Bhaskar, India’s second largest newspaper by readership, is set to launch a Hindi business paper by the end of July, according to two company executives familiar with the development. The executives said while a formal date for the launch hasn’t been fixed, the paper, to be called Bhaskar Business, will launch in all the strong markets of the Dainik Bhaskar and will likely have 10-15 editions. “Yes, we are looking at the business news market and we have firm plans to launch a product,” confirmed Rajiv Jaitly, president for sales and marketing at DB Corp. He discounts some regional-language business dailies, saying that the numbers are minuscule, so they hardly make a dent in the total circulation. Take for instance, the print run of Nafa Nuksan, the Hindi business daily in Rajasthan. It’s a mere 20,000. Ask Financial Express (FE), which has a Gujarati version; the print run may be far less as it is not ready to reveal the figures, but claims that it has a readership of about 25,000. Economic Times (ET) too has a Gujarati version. However, there is a need in the regional space for business dailies and media houses have woken up to it. Hindi business daily from Raipur

Vedanta group is said to have taken a lead over other media houses who are yet to launch their proposed Hindi business dailies by launching one from Raipur the capital city of Chattisgarh. Economic Times in Hindi may hit the stands in another one month the dummy is said to come out by 19 February onwards. Other Hindi business dailies from Business Standard and Dainik Jagran are still in the pipeline.

The list of companies includes Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd (BCCL), Business Standard Ltd, Amar Ujala and Jagran Prakashan Ltd and Television18 India Ltd (the last two have partnered to launch a local language business daily). Numbers show the vernacular business news market is underserved. Currently, only 0.4% of the country’s population reads business papers of any kind. Economic Times in Hindi

The Times of India group is said to be preparing for the launch of Hindi version of Economic Times from Delhi. However the details are still under wraps and newspaper will see the light of the day somewhere in March next year. This will be second effort from a major Hindi newspaper group. Amar Ujala was the first one which came out with Karobaar however it closed down. At present Hindi business weekly Vyapaar is being published from Mumbai and Nafa Nuksaan from Jaipur.
