Media firms get ready to fill space for Hindi business papers

courtsey http://www.livemint.com/ Sagar Malviya Mumbai In an attempt to tap growing demand for financial news, especially that related to the stock markets, at least six Indian media companies plan to launch newspapers in Hindi and other languages such as Gujarati. The list of companies includes Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd (BCCL), Business Standard Ltd, Amar Ujala and Jagran Prakashan Ltd and Television18 India Ltd (the last two have partnered to launch a local language business daily). Equations may change in Rajasthan

Navjyoti the Ajmer based Hindi daily is said to be on the verge of joining hands with Dainik Jagran. Merely the mention of Jagran's backdoor entry into the lurcative media market of India largest state Rajasthan has set alarm bells ringing in the corridors of competitors. Rajasthan is not only unique as far as its culture and landscape is concerned but it is among the few states of the country where power sharing is a matter to be settled between two parties. In politics they are Congress and BJP and in media Rajasthan Patrika and Dainik Bhaskar nobody has been able to change or challenge this. Even after Punjab Kesari started Jaipur edition there were no murmurs heard among the competitors. However things may change in the near future for what only time can tell.

Prabhat Khabar on recruitment drive

Prabhat Khabar leading Hindi daily of Jharkhand is on a recruitment drive. There are vaccancies almost in all the departments leave alone editorial. The newspaper seems to gearing up for the batle ahead. It has been feeling the heat of competition from existing players like Dainik Jagran and Hindustan. There are few more launches which may include Ranchi edition of Rashtriya Sahara and tabloid Inext from the Jagran. Dainik Bhaskar is also said to be eyeing the market.

Compact to have 5 more editions

Sunil Mutreja, President – Marketing, Amar Ujala, in an interview to Impact has said the tabloid from Amar Ujala will have editions from Varanasi, Allahabad, Dehradun, Ghaziabad and Meerut by January 30. Compact is already getting published from Kanpur and Agra. Mutreja says it has been very well accepted by the reader. It is a replica of Amar Ujala, but has a different price segment. It is for the people who could not afford a Rs 3 – Rs 3.50 newspaper. Post that, we will move to Lucknow. That is the writing on the wall. By mid- to end-March, we should have a Lucknow edition. We plan to move to Ludhiana after that, which should happen in October. Beyond that, there are a couple of more print products in the pipeline, which are in the compact format. We have not yet frozen on the content and it is at the concept stage.

“If you don’t require me I don’t need your ads” – Sunil Mutreja

Courtsey exchange4media.com In today’s time, small indeed is big. Hindi daily Amar Ujala, after launching a compact version of its main edition in October last year, in Agra and Kanpur, is taking the smaller-sized version to five more cities, aiming to strengthen its presence in the northern belt. Going with the tagline ‘Compact size sampurna akhbaar. Ek rupaye mein sabki khabar’, the daily plans to communicate a change in its positioning too. Now this media organisation too, will look at being a media ‘solutions’ organisation instead of a media ‘selling’ organisation. So, garnering more ad revenues is on the agenda, but ‘not atthe cost of brand fit’. Sunil Mutreja, President – Marketing, Amar Ujala, spoke about the growth plans of the Hindi daily and lent perspectives on the Hindi-versus- English media debate in a conversation with Ruchika Chitravanshi. Excerpts: Last year, Amar Ujala changed its look, going for a sleeker version. The masthead was changed from black to blue, for start

Mrinal on his way out

If rumours are to be beleived then group editor of Hindustan Mrinal Pande may be on his way out. She is said to be making way for N.K.Singh who is at present with Indian Express in Ahmedabad. Ealier singh was associated with Dainik Bhaskar, Jaipur. Insiders say Pande may put down her papers in February. At a time when Hindustan Hindi daily from the HT media Limited on an expansion spree launching editions from Agra and Kanpur and planning for more with Dehradun already in the offing and Bhopal in the pipeline there are questions being raised. There are different pressure groups acting within the organisation. In the recent past Delhi edition of Hindustan has seen a number of employees deserting the ship in search for greener pastures.

Wings clipped, future tense

Dainik Bhaskar has clipped wings of one its editor in Jaipur. Although his transfer orders for Bikaner have been revoked. He has been left with looking after Jaipur gramin. It is being said the above mentioned editor a veteran in his field has suffered due to internal bickering inside the organisation. At a time when rival Rajasthan Patrika has been able to lure away readers from the newspaper by launching another Hindi morninger Daily News and consolidating its foothold with eveninger News Today in print space the future seems a bit difficult for the group. Very soon Bhaskar will see several players knocking on the door in Madhya Pradesh the very state from where it began its journey. The group focus for a while shifted towards its english daily DNA and gujarati Divya Bhaskar which seems to have cost it dearly in the Hindi print media space as far as leadership position is concerned with Dainik Jagran succeding in regaining its lost glory after losing for a while to the Bhaskar. The

Action shifts to Uttarakhand and MP

The two states which are going to witness action in the new year as far as Hindi print meia is concerned are Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh . Dehradun the capital of Uttarakhand will see the launch of three newspapers including two tabloids. While the Delhi bases Hindi daily Hindustan from the HT media limited will see the light of day in another two or three months. Dainik Jagran will launch Inext and Amar Ujala will follow in the footsteps with Compact. Uttarakhand will be the first state after Uttar Pradesh to see the launch the of tabloids from these two major Hindi newspapers. Last year Rashtriya Sahara has made an entry to the hill state by launching am edtion from Dehradun. The media fraternity as well as readers are enjoying the ensuing war between major Hindi newspapers and are waiting for more to come. In the new year there will also be more action seen in Madhya Pradesh . While Rajasthan Patrika has already firmed up its plans of launching editions of Daily

Compact from Allahabad and Dehradun

Amar Ujala is on its way to launch two more editions of its tabloid Compact from Allahabad and Dehradun in the new year. Recently the rival Dainik Jagran has launched its tabloid Inext from Allahabad and will very soon be adding one more edition to its kitty ie. Dehradun. Amar Ujala already has two editions of its tabloid from Kanpur and Agra.

Sahara's Patna edition may see more exits

Rashtriya Sahara's Patna edition since its launch has been beseiged by exits from its editorial department. Omkareshwar Pandey the first resident editor of the newspaper in Patna is back in Rashtriya Sahara's Delhi bureau which itself has seen key correspondents moving out to the greener pastures. Some key people who have moved from Patna edition include those who were tansferred from Delhi and Noida offices of the newspaper to the city. While noted journalist Prabhat Ranjan Deen now heads a newspaper in Lucknow where he was earlier resident editor of the now defunct Jansatta Express before joining Sahara. Ex Chief Reporter Delhi who was transferred there Vidya Shanker Tiwari is now with the Amar Ujala and Bureau Chief of Patna edition Manoj Mehta is said to have moved on to the newly launched newspaper Aaj Samaj.
